Why Spackling and Drywall Repair Come Before the Paint

    September 16, 2026 Norberto Painting

It's tempting to just roll a new color over a tired wall. But paint is thin — it follows every dent, nail hole, ridge, and seam instead of covering them.

That's why our projects start with repair. We fill nail holes and dents with spackle, cut out and patch damaged drywall, re-tape failing seams, and fix cracks in walls and ceilings.

For walls that are rough overall — often after wallpaper removal or years of patchwork — we skim coat the whole surface with a thin layer of joint compound, then sand it smooth. The difference under paint is dramatic.

Repairs and bare drywall also need primer. Without it, patched spots soak up paint differently than the rest of the wall and show through as dull blotches, a problem called flashing.

Because we handle both the drywall work and the painting, you don't have to coordinate two crews. Call Norberto Painting at (908) 384-4042 to get started.
